The term "REM sleep" is derived because during this stage the eyes whirl around behind your closed lids. In contrast to the sleep phases which are characterized by brain waves that are slow, REM sleep is characterized by physiological signs that are comparable to when you're awake. Heart rate and breathing, blood pressure and brain activity are at or near to their normal levels.
